In early July of 1998, the KLA dug trenches a ki\u0002lometre from the village. The Serbs had a few good rifles, the rest were hunting we\u0002apons. The telephone lines did not work. There was shooting, and most of the young Serbs with children left the village. Seven\u0002teen remained behind. They were: Mladen Bo\u017eani\u0107 with his wife Dragica and son Ne\u0002manja; Mladen\u2019s mother Dobrila; Mladen\u2019s cousin Bo\u017eidar with his wife Du\u0161anka and son Novica. Of the Burd\u017ei\u0107 family, the brothers Spasoje and Miodrag remained, Miodrag\u2019s wife Slavka, and Milutin and his wife Stanojka. Also remaining were Spaso\u0002je Banzi\u0107, his wife Slavica and mother De\u0002sanka; and Sreten Simi\u0107 with his wife Olga. Of the men, only Novica and Nemanja Bo\u0002\u017eani\u0107 were young and healthy. On the afternoon of Friday 17 July 1998, shooting could be heard in the sur\u0002roundings of Opterush\u00eb\/Opteru\u0161a. All except Milutin, Stanojka, Desanka and Ol\u0002ga took refuge at the Bo\u017eani\u0107 house in the centre of the village. The women hid in the cellar of Mladen\u2019s new house and the men, armed with rifles, stood guard. At about 01:00h after midnight [18 July 1998], the KLA opened fire on the Serb houses. Ne\u0002manja was wounded by the explosion of a rocket from a hand-held launcher which hit Bo\u0161ko\u2019s house. The men continued re\u0002turning fire until morning, when they deci\u0002ded to surrender. About forty KLA entered the Bo\u017eani\u0107\u2019s yard, among whom Mladen and the others recognised five [their names are known to the HLC]. The soldiers first took the men\u2019s weapons and then searched them all. They then took them in Bo\u0161ko\u2019s tractor to the Bo\u017eani\u0107 family vineyard abo\u0002ve the village. Soon afterwards they also brought up Milutin, Stanojka, Desanka and Olga, who had remained in the villa\u0002ge. From there they took them in a tarpau\u0002lin-covered lorry to Semetishte\/Semeti\u0161te [Suharrek\u00eb\/Suva Reka municipality] to an Albanian house. They took the women upstairs and locked the men in the cellar.<br \/>\nFor hours, the women could hear the cries of the men who were being beaten by the soldiers. At 22:00h on Sunday, the soldiers took Dragica, Dobrila, Du\u0161anka, Slavka, Slavica, Desanka, Olga, Stanojka and the elderly Milutin to Zoqisht\u00eb\/Zo\u010di\u0161te. On an unspecified day at the end of July, the men from Opterush\u00eb\/Opteru\u0161a were taken out<br \/>\nof the KLA prison in Malishev\u00eb\/Mali\u0161evo[the police station building] together with captured Serbs from Reti\/Retimlje [see record bellow] and other prisoners, and driven towards Prishtin\u00eb\/Pri\u0161tina. For a long time, their families did not know what had become of the men from Opterush\u00eb\/Opteru\u0161a. After almost eight years, their bodies were exhumed from a mass grave in the village of Vulljak\u00eb\/Volujak [Klin\u00eb\/Kli\u0002na municipality] in April 2005. Following DNA identification, on 13 October 2006 in Merdare, the UNMIK Missing Persons\u2019 Of\u00adfi\u00adce handed over the bodies of Mladen, Nemanja, Bo\u017eidar, Novica, Sreten, Spaso\u0002je Banzi\u0107, Spasoje and Miodrag Burd\u017ei\u0107 to their families.
