{"id":183751,"date":"2020-08-12T16:06:13","date_gmt":"2020-08-12T15:06:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.recom.link\/?p=183751"},"modified":"2020-10-01T09:42:09","modified_gmt":"2020-10-01T08:42:09","slug":"birn-forgotten-victims-serbs-targeted-in-bosnia-croatia-border-village-killings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.recom.link\/en\/birn-forgotten-victims-serbs-targeted-in-bosnia-croatia-border-village-killings\/","title":{"rendered":"BIRN &#8211; Forgotten Victims: Serbs Targeted in Bosnia-Croatia Border Village Killings"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Only one person has ever been convicted of killing Serb civilians in the village of Sijekovac in March 1992 &#8211; one of the first crimes of the Bosnian war &#8211; and one potential suspect has just been elected a MP in neighbouring Croatia.<\/h3>\n<div class=\"post_teaser\">\n<p>Sa\u0161a Milo\u0161evi\u0107 was only ten years old when he was captured by fighters during an attack on the village of Sijekovac on the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia on March 26, 1992.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey took me from my mother and one of them put a knife to my throat. He said: \u2018Now I will slaughter you too.\u2019 I was crying,\u201d Milo\u0161evi\u0107 recalled.<\/p>\n<p>The man with the knife relented: \u201c\u2018Come on, I won\u2019t do it, you are still young.\u2019 That is what he said and let me go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is still not known who the man with the knife was. Milosevic is unable to identify any of his assailants. \u201cEighty per cent of them had stockings over their heads,\u201d he told BIRN.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bt_bb_wrapper\">\n<section id=\"bt_section5f33f527d5c66\" class=\"boldSection gutter boxed-800 inherit\">\n<div class=\"port\">\n<div class=\"boldCell\">\n<div class=\"boldCellInner\">\n<div class=\"boldRow \">\n<div class=\"boldRowInner\">\n<div class=\"rowItem col-md-12 col-ms-12 btTextLeft\" data-width=\"12\">\n<div class=\"rowItemContent\">\n<div class=\"btText\">\n<p>On that same day in Traktorska Street in Sijekovac, a village near the northern Bosnian town of Bosanski Brod, where Milo\u0161evi\u0107 still lives, soldiers and members of paramilitary groups, some of which consisted of locals Croats and Bosniaks, killed his father Luka and two brothers, \u017deljko and Dragan, who was 17. \u017deljko\u2019s body has never been found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMembers of a Croat-Muslim group, with the participation of military formations from Croatia, one of which numerous witnesses have identified as the HOS [Croatian Defence Forces]\u201d attempted to take control over the ethnically-mixed village, according to a verdict handed down by the Bosnian state court that\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/balkaninsight.com\/2015\/05\/27\/verdict-against-zemir-kovacevic-confirmed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">convicted a fighter called Zemir Kova\u010devi\u0107<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Kova\u010devi\u0107, a member of an armed group which later became the Interventions Squad of the Croatian Defence Council\u2019s 101st Bosanski Brod Brigade, was jailed for ten years for participating in the murders, mistreatment and looting of Serb civilians in Sijekovac.<\/p>\n<p>According to allegations made by the Centre for the Investigation of War Crimes in Bosnia\u2019s Serb-dominated Republika Srpska entity, the attack on Sijekovac was conducted by regular Croatian Army forces [HV] , Croatian National Guard [ZNG] members and Croatian Defence Forces [HVO] paramilitaries.<\/p>\n<p>The Centre for the Investigation of War Crimes claims that, following the first attack on Sijekovac, in which nine civilians died, at least 11 more Serb residents were killed in a subsequent attack.<\/p>\n<p>The Bosnian state court found that the initial attack on Sijekovac was preceded by a meeting of the local crisis committee, the wartime authority in the village, at which Serbs were ordered to hand over their weapons.<\/p>\n<p>After that, large groups of uniformed people began gathering and Serbs were urged via megaphones to surrender. The attack on Serb-populated areas then began after 4:00pm.<\/p>\n<p>Sasa Milosevic still remembers the details clearly. \u201cAll of a sudden, the shooting started. I went to my neighbour\u2019s basement together with my mother and younger brother. My elder brother and father stayed in our yard. The shooting lasted half an hour. Shells were falling,\u201d Milosevic recalled.<\/p>\n<p>The court found that 19 civilians, including five children, hid from the shooting in the basement of the Ze\u010devi\u0107 family\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbours who were Croatian Army soldiers then came to remove them from their hiding place, Milo\u0161evi\u0107 said: \u201cThey cursed us, they told us all sort of things. They pushed us and kicked us. They pushed us down to the ground. My mother kept me in her arms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Three sons and a husband killed<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183757\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183757\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.recom.link\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Milja-Zecevic_Sijekovac_Vladimir-Susak_BIRN_e1597136080254_20200812.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-183757\" src=\"https:\/\/www.recom.link\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Milja-Zecevic_Sijekovac_Vladimir-Susak_BIRN_e1597136080254_20200812-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Milja Ze\u010devi\u0107s three sons and husbands were killed. Photo: Vladimir Susak\/BIRN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As well as the beatings and intimidation, the ten-year-old boy also saw Zemir Kova\u010devi\u0107 killing a disabled man, Petar Ze\u010devi\u0107, and a pensioner, Jovo Ze\u010devi\u0107. \u201cThe man was over 70 years old. [Kova\u010devi\u0107] approached him and cursed him\u2026 He then put a pistol on his head and killed Jovo Ze\u010devi\u0107,\u201d Milosevic said.<\/p>\n<p>Jovo Ze\u010devi\u0107 was Milja Ze\u010devi\u0107\u2019s husband. Three of her four sons were also killed that day \u2013 Petar, Milan and Vaso.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Milan] was shouting: \u2018Do not harm my wife and children.\u2019 They chased [his wife Jelica] like a dog,\u201d recalled Ze\u010devi\u0107, who is now 90 years old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey killed Vaso right here at the house door with a volley of bullets. And they killed Petar over there where the fence is. They killed my Jovo in my arms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the same day, several local Serbs\u2019 houses were torched and around 30 civilians, mostly women and children, were detained and physically and psychologically abused, the state court found in the Zemir Kova\u010devi\u0107 trial.<\/p>\n<p>The murders committed in March 1992 by Kova\u010devi\u0107 and other unidentified members of the armed group were also witnessed by 81-year-old Ljubica Sedli\u0107, who was hiding with her husband Novak about 50 metres away in her garden.<\/p>\n<p>Then, the following month, the fighters returned to Sijekovac. Sedli\u0107 fled but her husband stayed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The house] was locked, but they kicked the door open and entered. They poured gasoline over him and set him on fire in the bathtub,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ran to try and help him, but they kicked me and told me: \u2018You\u2019ll end up the same as your husband.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Potential suspect elected to Croatian parliament<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.recom.link\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Sijekovac_Memorial_Vladimir-Susak_BIRN_BI_20200812.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-183767\" src=\"https:\/\/www.recom.link\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Sijekovac_Memorial_Vladimir-Susak_BIRN_BI_20200812-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Memorial for the victims in Sijekovac. Photo: Vladimir Susak\/BIRNSedli\u0107 said she recognised one of the fighters who came to her home \u2013 a man called Nijaz \u010cau\u0161evi\u0107, a member of the Croatian Defence Council 101st Brigade\u2019s Interventions Squad.<\/p>\n<p>At the trial of Kova\u010devi\u0107, \u010cau\u0161evi\u0107\u2019s name was mentioned several times. He was said to be the man whose voice was recognised using a megaphone to urge Serbs to surrender. Several witnesses also saw \u010cau\u0161evi\u0107 with Zemir Kova\u010devi\u0107 during the robbery of Serb households in Sijekovac and other villages. One of the witnesses who was expelled from his house together with his family during the first attack on Sijekovac on March 26 said \u010cau\u0161evi\u0107 was at the scene at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The verdict in the Kova\u010devi\u0107 trial said that the group led by \u010cau\u0161evi\u0107, with the participation of Kova\u010devi\u0107 and others, together with Croatian Defence Council members led by a fighter called Ante Prkacin from Slavonski Brod, participated in mistreating and killing people and destroying Serbs\u2019 property.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, the District Public Prosecution in the city of Doboj filed an indictment accusing \u010cau\u0161evi\u0107 of committing a war crime against the civilian population in Sijekovac.<\/p>\n<p>The indictment accused \u010cau\u0161evi\u0107 of \u201cparticipating in the unlawful search of houses, confiscation of property, unlawful arrests and detention of civilians, as well as escorting them to a prison\/detention camp, which resulted in severe physical suffering, mental anguish and bodily injuries to the detainees\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It also accused him of participating in the murder of at least one civilian.<\/p>\n<p>\u010cau\u0161evi\u0107 has denied having any role in the crimes in Sijekovac. As several Croatian media outlets have reported, he now lives in Croatia. He could not be contacted for a comment for this article.<\/p>\n<p>The District Public Prosecution in Doboj said it has made the evidence available to the Croatian State Attorney\u2019s Office. However, the State Attorney\u2019s Office did not respond to BIRN\u2019s request for a comment on whether it is taking any action in the case.<\/p>\n<p>Marko Grabovac, the head of the Association for the Search for Captured Soldiers and Missing Civilians from Brod, said he believes that Ante Prka\u010din, former chief of the main headquarters of the Croatian Defence Forces and later of the Croatian Defence Council, was responsible for the crimes in Sijekovac as well as Kova\u010devi\u0107 and \u010cau\u0161evi\u0107.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a number of witnesses\u2019 statements about Ante Prka\u010din,\u201d Grabovac said. \u201cHowever, he eventually said: \u2018I was not there at the time.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the trial of Kova\u010devi\u0107, the court concluded that Croatian Defence Forces members led by Prka\u010din were in the Ze\u010devi\u0107 family\u2019s yard in Traktorska Street on March 26, 1992. One of the witnesses said that Prka\u0107in was also present in the Ze\u010devi\u0107s\u2019 basement.<\/p>\n<p>Contacted by BIRN by telephone, Prka\u010din denied any wrongdoing. \u201cI did not commit crimes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Prka\u010din ran as a candidate for folk-singer-turned-politician Miroslav \u0160koro\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/balkaninsight.com\/2020\/05\/22\/nationalists-may-hold-key-to-power-after-croatian-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">right-wing populist Homeland Movement bloc<\/a>\u00a0at the parliamentary elections in Croatia last month.<\/p>\n<p>The Homeland Movement won 16 seats, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sabor.hr\/en\/members-parliament\/prkacin-ante-10-term\"><strong>Prka\u010din is now a Croatian MP<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Brother\u2019s body shown on television<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183762\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183762\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.recom.link\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Sasa-Milosevic_Vladimir-Susak_BIRN_e1597136466675_20200812.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-183762\" src=\"https:\/\/www.recom.link\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Sasa-Milosevic_Vladimir-Susak_BIRN_e1597136466675_20200812-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Sa\u0161a Milo\u0161evi\u0107 survived the killings in 1992.
