{"id":141976,"date":"2016-12-27T09:27:12","date_gmt":"2016-12-27T08:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.recom.link\/?p=141976"},"modified":"2020-04-17T11:59:12","modified_gmt":"2020-04-17T10:59:12","slug":"kosovo-president-defends-visits-serb-war-memorials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.recom.link\/en\/kosovo-president-defends-visits-serb-war-memorials\/","title":{"rendered":"Kosovo President Defends Visits to Serb War Memorials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Hashim Thaci said he paid tribute at memorials to Serb war victims as a gesture of reconciliation and was not insulting Kosovo Albanians\u2019 struggle for liberation during the 1990s conflict.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.balkaninsight.com\/en\/file\/show\/\/Images\/Images.New\/Places\/Pristina\/Thaci_Kuvend_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"270\" \/><\/p>\n<p>President Hashim Thaci told parliament on Friday that he visited memorials to Serbs killed during and after the 1999 war in recent months to send a message of reconciliation, and rejected claims that he was denigrating the Kosovo Liberation Army\u2019s struggle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was said that the values of the Kosovo people\u2019s war for freedom were being undermined, that the martyrs and the holy war of the KLA were being insulted,\u201d Thaci told MPs.<\/p>\n<p>Thaci was criticised by Kosovo Albanians after his visit to a memorial to Serbs who were killed 17 years ago in Staro Gracko\/Gracke, on which it was written that the victims were murdered by \u201cAlbanian terrorists\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew what was written on those memorials in the Cyrillic alphabet. I do not agree with that text because it is prejudiced and a lie. But this should not stop us honouring the victims,\u201d said Thaci.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am convinced that I was doing the best for the country,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks after Thaci visited the memorial in Staro Gracko\/Gracke, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.balkaninsight.com\/en\/article\/serbian-victims-memorial-profaned-09-02-2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unknown vandals targeted it with threatening graffiti<\/a>, writing the Albanian word \u201cHakmarrja\u201d (\u201cRevenge\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Thaci also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.balkaninsight.com\/en\/article\/president-thaci-commemorates-kosovo-serb-war-victims-12-12-2016\">visited a Serb memorial in Hoqa e Madhe\/Velika Hoca<\/a> this month.<\/p>\n<p>During his address to parliament, Thaci also said that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.balkaninsight.com\/en\/page\/Kosovo-special-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the new Hague-based Special Court which is expected to file its first indictments against former KLA officers next year<\/a> was not set up because of poor political decisions in Kosovo, but because domestic courts failed to protect witnesses in war crimes cases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternational pressure to establish the Special Court came as a result of bad experiences of protecting witnesses, threats [against them] or their murder.
